Philippe Manoury was born in Tulle, France in 1952. He began studying computer-assisted musical composition in 1975. En-Echo is Manoury’s piece for solo soprano and electronics. He says of the piece that it is “the first time in the history of electronic music that the vocal part of a composition was automatically followed by the computer, which was making a real time analysis of sounds of the voice to be used in, creating the synthetic sounds…[accomplishing] a closer intimacy between the interpreter and the electronic music.” Manoury currently teaches composition, signal processing, and musical analysis at the University of California, San Diego.
