CHARLES IVES: String Quartet No. 2
CARL RUGGLESExaltation (arr. Colin Fowler)

Discussions, Arguments, and a View from the Mountain. That, in a nutshell, is how Charles Ives described his Second String Quartet. It might well describe this unruly flock of composers, who flew in scattered formation around Ives, taking bearings from – and on occasion issue with – him and each other, each on wing toward an independent summit.
Some of Cowell’s works are unpublished and are performed by permission of The David and Sylvia Teitelbaum Fund, Inc., as successors to Henry and Sidney Cowell.

Ives, Cowell, Harrison – three generations of explorers who mapped the terrain of their own imagination, fusing worlds, creating rituals for unknown sacraments, writing anthems for hybrid realms. They conjure, through sound, music that embraces the fullness of what we may yet become.
